For those of you who are participating in the “Finding Joy in February” Joyfully HIS Bible Reading Plan, you most likely began your reading in Galatians today.
My hope and prayer in creating and sharing this series, has been that as followers of Christ, we will not just read the Bible. Instead, we will read it, study it, and dig into its truths so that it not only grows our knowledge and understanding but that God’s Word transforms us from the inside out all for His honor and glory.
One thing I hope to challenge you to do as you study your Bible is to take time to grasp the correct context of each Book before you begin reading it. In light of this, I am going to provide some of these details for you before we begin reading a new Book of the Bible.
GALATIANS
Galatians is a letter in the New Testament section of the Bible that was written by the Apostle Paul around AD48-50 (approximately 15-20 years after the death of Jesus Christ). Because of the death of Jesus, believers were living in a new age of the new covenant. No longer were they tied to the ceremonial laws and rituals, instead they were to live by faith alone in Christ. And it was this faith that offered them Salvation. They couldn’t work for it, or earn it —it was simply through believing and trusting that Jesus was the Son of God and that He gave up His life so that they could now be forgiven and be in right standing before a Holy God.
Even though the people and Churches of Galatia had been taught by Paul that Salvation was by faith alone, false teachings had permeated throughout causing not only confusion but division as well between the Jews and the Gentiles.
The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to rectify the false teachings and remind them of the truth of the Gospel that they had been previously taught. How did they forget so quickly? How did they “fall” for the false teachings? How were they so easy to be deceived by the untruth that they must work to achieve Salvation when Paul had taught them the right way already?
As these questions began to funnel through my brain, fueling my thoughts in one direction and then another, it seemed so ludicrous that these Gentiles would so much as hear off this untruth, must less be led astray by it.
And then I looked in the mirror and asked myself how many times in my life had I chosen a direction based on the majority. How many times had I assumed that surely if so many think it’s right then it must be right? But what if I had not only known “the truth” but had decided to follow it for myself? Well, the majority would have quite possibly had much less persuasive power over me.
Our Salvation is a result of our faith in Jesus Christ.
Our Faith isn’t a result of choosing to believe what our friends, family, or anyone else believes simply because we trust them to tell the truth and not lead us astray. Our faith becomes real faith when we trust the Word of God and live our lives based on the truths that He reveals to us throughout.
Let us be the ones who seek God and His Word each and every day and share the truth of the Bible with the world around us.
