The best way to begin any book of the Bible is to explore its background and contextual information. This allows us to discover facts about the time in which it was written, the purpose the author wrote it, and to who it was written.
So, let’s dive into it together…
Introduction to Colossians
Author: The Apostle Paul
Date: Early AD 60s
Context: Paul wrote this letter, along with Philemon, during his first Roman imprisonment (which was house arrest), which is why Colossians is known as a prison epistle.
Audience: Paul was writing about the church of Colossae. Coloassae was located in the southwestern region of Asia Minor. This city was once recognized as important; however, when Paul was writing this letter, its prestige had been drastically reduced, possibly due to the growth and increase of the surrounding cities in addition to the damage caused by the series of earthquakes that had taken their toll on this region.
Purpose: Paul’s letter to the Colossians was written to correct the false teachings that were being introduced in the church. In the first part of the letter, Paul brings these false teachings to light. The second part of the letter provides guidance on how Christians should live by identifying and explaining the truth of the Gospel and what it offers to Christians.
