THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
AUTHORSHIP OF LUKE:
This Gospel was written by Luke, a physician, and companion of the apostle Paul, Luke presents a distinct voice among the Gospel writers and is referred to affectionately as "The beloved Physician" in Colossians 4:14. While this Gentile doctor was not an eyewitness to the life, ministry and death of Jesus he had close associations of relationships to those that were. In the first paragraph of the Gospel Luke offers a glimpse into his purpose by saying “it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:3-4). Luke’s attention to detail and structured narrative will be revealed throughout.
DATE OF LUKE:
Written as the third Gospel in the New Testament, the precise dating of Luke's writing has been debated by Scholars. While some advocate for an earlier date, placing it in the early 60s AD, others argue for a later time that could possibly stretch into the 80s AD. The reasoning behind these contrasting views stems from various historical events and literary considerations. I lean towards an earlier date for several reasons. But my primary one would be that Luke's Gospel serves as a precursor to the book of Acts, therefore Luke would have been written before Acts. If this is the case it seems that Luke would not fail to mention noteworthy events like the fall of Jerusalem, the Neronian persecution, and several others. However, there are also compelling arguments for a later date as well. You are more than welcome to share your thoughts on the dating of Luke’s Gospel.
THEMES/THEOLOGICAL EMPHASES OF LUKE:
Luke's Gospel reveals an orderly array of theological themes that resonate deeply with readers across generations. As you read and study through Luke during March, you will not only find an orderly historical account written by one who was a close friend of Paul’s and joined in on his missionary journeys but also one who was well acquainted with others who walked personally with Jesus. Luke unfolds the truth of Jesus as the Messiah over all Nations of God throughout history. This Gospel offers an accurate representation of our Savior whose love transcends over time, culture, and religious boundaries of that day. To further display this point, Luke 3 gives a thorough genealogy that begins at Adam and leads all the way to Jesus. In addition to this idea of the Nations, and the prominence of prayer and examples of Jesus’ prayers, revealed evidence of the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, the concern that Jesus has for the poor, oppressed, and rejected.
As we dive in, let us read God’s Word through this proper lens in which it was written by considering the audience at the time and the purpose it was written. And as we learn and embrace the richness of the truths of these historical insights let us prayerfully encounter the life-changing and life-giving spiritual truths that illuminate our understanding of God's redemptive plan for all. Whether you are reading for the first time or revisiting with fresh eyes, Luke's Gospel will inspire, inform, challenge, and bring you into a deeper intimacy with the perfect sovereignty of God and Jesus the Messiah.
